This site takes a logical look at a whole range of myths and lies that have infiltrated our lives; from the religious to the political, social to psychological.

09th January 2006 : Establishing a New Religion

What does it take to create an officially recognised religion?

Aparently not much more that a couple of 'like-minded' people (cloud-lovers, maybe) some sort of deity/deities and a postal address, or so it would seem.

With this in mind, I've been thinking about setting up my own. Nothing small and local you understand, but something that should appeal to the largest disenfranchised group out there. There need to be a lot of them and they MUST come from a fairly mindless demographic so I can clean up financially - and I want them to be as confused as possible:

We're to be called "The Global Lutherangic Union of Evangelicostal Bapticathmon Orthomusilm Young Scientosleyans"

Our font is a plastic bag, our Holy Water Bostik and our symbol is a thumb and forefinger stuck together.

The GLUEBOYS shall worship at the Altar Of Elmer behind dark buildings in rundown inner city areas.

We're happy to affiliate with other pseudo-religious groups if there's money in it.

This may sound ridiculous, but there are worse.......

09th January 2006 : What do you believe in?

Somebody, after reading one of my posts on this blog asked me what I believe in. My immediate response was that I believe in nothing that has no clear logical explanation. However, after a little consideration, I'll have to edit that.

You see, we all evolve and change. I didn't believe in love until I met my wife and love is, after all a much more spiritual state than it is logical.

When a baby dies, the parents are massively upset about it, but logically, there's usually a good chance that they can have another one in 9 months, so where's the foul? Of course it doesn't work like that. This is an emotional response to a human tragedy.

Most people who believe in anything spiritual don't really believe deeply, but prefer to have an open mind about it. this usually travels down the line of "Well, so many people believe in it, there must be some truth to it". This is obviously nonsensical, but adequately deals with the way most people feel about issues that don't directly concern them.

A much more worrying group are those who actually put time and energy into rationalising their belief in some of these preposterous ideas. Many such people have experienced some kind of personal tragedy or trauma which has either directly or indirectly lead them along an obscure path to an irrational conclusion. Once this point is reached it is far simpler, or more satisfying, to attempt to rationalise the idea than to admit that it is patently ridiculous.
Here are some examples of sites that seem to me to be dedicated to the ludicrous:

05th January 2006 : Is There More Than One God?

This one depends on who you talk to. Most religions, Christianity included, believe in ‘The One God’ who created the Heavens and the Earth. However, the translators – who have a spiritual link with all things divine (if you think about it, are we really reading the word of God or the word of a translator) can change biblical text to suit their mood on the day. According to the original writing of Genesis, God was, in fact The Gods:

"In the beginning God, created the heavens and the earth" Genesis 1:1

The word used for God in Genesis 1:1 is "Elohim," which is a form of the word "El." In the context of Genesis 1:1, there can certainly be no doubt as to who is doing the creating. In the Hebrew language the "im" ending definitely means plurality. Therefore, "Elohim" is the plural from of the word "El."

So there you have it, in the words of the original text writers, “The Gods created Heaven and Earth”

05th January 2006 : Does The Bible Condone Incest?

Does The Bible tacitly condone incest in the same way that I’m told it tacitly condemns homosexuality?

The Bible and Incest

This is an easy one (and an easy excuse for a cheap shot) – however it only works with those ludicrous Evangelical Conservative Christians.

Right, I was going to use biblical texts for this one, but its so obvious, I won’t bother.

Adam $ Eve (honestly) by Marc Chagall

EVERY WORD IN THE BIBLE IS TRUE - QUIZ TIME!!!!

1. Who were the first people on Earth?
If you answered Adam & Eve, get one point

2. What were the names of their children?

If you answered Cain & Abel, get another point

3. Who parented their grandchildren?
I know, scary, isn’t it………*

*By the way – and this is confusing – Cain killed Abel and was banished to the desert where he build a city. Who on earth did he build this city FOR?

And while I'm ranting, when God banished Cain to the desert, the boy was scared to go because 'So many people hated him' - Who were these people and where did they come from?

05th January 2006 : Does God Hate Gays?

The Bible and Homosexuality

First, the term ‘homosexual’ is relatively new, having entered the English language a mere 150 years ago. There were no words for homosexual in either the two languages of The Bible (Hebrew and Greek) or in the spoken language of Jesus Christ (Aramaic). In fact, it many assume that homosexuality, at least in Old Testament times was probably accepted. The evidence for this lies more in cultural references than biblical:
1. Often the victors in battle would anally rape their defeated enemies

2. It was the custom of the Romans to keep boy slaves as their sexual playthings (a practice that still existed among certain segments of the English aristocracy as recently as the 19th Century, who would be neither prosecuted nor condemned for using their own offspring as sexual playthings).
3. The complete absence of Talmudic evidence. It was not until around 1,000 years after the Torah was written does the Talmud make any reference to homosexuality being sinful. Even though there is an abundance of people being prosecuted for everything from theft to rape to you name it, nowhere is there evidence of anybody being convicted of homosexuality. There can be little doubt that homosexuality existed and it logically follows that several were ‘caught in the act’, so we must assume that far from being an ‘abhorrence to God’ it was considered no big deal.
